Get an annual eye check-up done if you are above 40. Takes around 10 mins to check for glaucoma. But those few minutes could make or break your life.

Because: ​

• Most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain from increased eye pressure.
• You are losing eyesight gradually, but you don't know it until the pain starts - the eyesight you have already lost is irreversible.
• ​Without treatment, glaucoma can cause total permanent blindness within a few years.
• The direct cause of the blockage in the eye is as yet unknown.
• Age and heredity have a huge part to play​. Ask your parents if anyone in the family has ever had glaucoma.
• Even the most fit and healthy person can get glaucoma. There is nothing you can do to prevent it happening - though diabetes and other conditions could increase the chances.
• There is a high prevalence of glaucoma in India, see article below.
• The only way to protect oneself from losing sight to glaucoma is by early detection.
• If the blockage is caught early enough a laser procedure can be done to prevent glaucoma and nerve damage.
