Tests to do Post Covid Vaccine

Disclaimer: This information has been compiled following discussion with a doctor. But if you have specific health problems, you may need to do these tests even earlier - and maybe you need to do additional tests. Speak to a doctor and follow their advice. If caught early, problems can be reversed - don't wait for symptoms.

Vaccines are important - increasing our risk of catching Covid is not wise. And long Covid can seriously affect your life. We just need to make sure we follow the right protocols after we take vaccines. Only very few people develop issues, most people will be fine

To detect potential Covid vaccine-induced sub-clinical/delayed myocarditis early on, it is advisable to do the following tests 45 days after your second vaccine. Or earlier if you have existing conditions, see Disclaimer above.

It is advisable to do these tests even if you have NO SYMPTOMS and are feeling fine. Applies to people who have NOT had Covid also.

It may be good to AVOID any strenuous exercise until these tests are done.

Some people have heart attacks following vaccine-induced inflammation in the heart, which does not show any symptoms. These tests will catch the inflammation if it exists.

A few basic blood tests are usually prescribed to check impact to your health parameters. These are some of the tests doctors prescribe usually to check your risk of heart disease or diabetes post Covid. Please check with your doctor - they will prescribe tests based on your existing health condition, predisposition to certain illnesses etc.

  1. CBC + ESR
  2. High Sensitivity CRP
  3. Troponin
  4. D Dimer

If any issues in reports, doctor may advice further tests like ECG and 2 D Echo.

Ask the doctor also when you should repeat these tests. That will depend on the reports, age and co morbidities. Do not try to read the results yourself - show them to a doctor.

High Sensitivity CRPHigh-sensitivity CRP is one of a growing number of cardiac risk markers that are used to help determine a person’s risk. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein that increases in the blood with inflammation and infection as well as following a heart attack, surgery, or trauma.

ESR: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR or sed rate) is a test that indirectly measures the degree of inflammation present in the body.

Troponin: Troponins are a group of proteins found in skeletal and heart (cardiac) muscle fibers that regulate muscular contraction. Troponin tests measure the level of cardiac-specific troponin in the blood to help detect heart injury.

D Dimer: Is used to find out if you are at risk of getting blood clots. This is a known side effect of Covid, so Covid-recovered patients are advised to take this a couple of times following recovery. And are usually prescribed Aspirin for a month to prevent blood clots. To eliminate the possibility of the same situation being caused by the vaccine, it is advisable to get this test done.

Note that research is still going on because it is a new situation. No one has all the answers - so the only thing we can do is do tests and keep a check. If you find any more recent research on vaccine-induced myocarditis, please let me know.

Upset Stomach: Home Remedies

Disclaimer: Compiled from various people. May or may not work for you. I have personally tried out only a few of these.

Until your stomach gets better, stop your weight loss and other goals. If your gut is not functioning well anyways nothing is getting absorbed.
  1. Homemade curd with half a teaspoon of methi seeds....twice a day.
  2. BRAT diet. Banana rice apple toast.
  3. Pudin Hara
  4. Barley water at regular intervals of time
  5. Castor oil for your belly button - at night. This reduces body heat.
  6. Drink plenty of water. Have apples & pomegranate.
  7. Enterogermina Probiotic Supplement twice a day after food
  8. Kokum syrup. Reduces heat in body. Someone recommended this.
  9. Have some sabja/basil seeds after soaking in water. They swell up. This reduces heat in the body.
  10. Get arrow root powder. (Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Shala should have). Mix 1 big spoon of the power in cold water. Then add a couple of cups of water and boil, constantly stirring. It will become a paste - then stop boiling and have. Is a great binder.

Nutrition: Useful Tips

Balance your diet + sleep + exercise + mental wellbeing. Need investment in all of them in parallel

If you are sick and don't eat enough, your body starts storing fat - not enough food is  a famine signal to the body, so it starts storing fat. Your body first start breaking down muscle. And only then uses the fat reserve.

Post-Covid: Important Tips

Disclaimer: These tips were initially compiled after the Covid wave in April-May-June 2021 - what doctors learned after watching the post-Covid effects on patients who had fully recovered. Whether these are relevant for all variants, we don't know yet - though doctors are now finding connections between the increase in heart attacks (even in the young) and Covid infections, even Omicron. See article below. These are easy steps to follow and could save lives - as always, prevention is FAR cheaper than cure. 😀

Note: Just because you were asymptomatic/had very mild symptoms, it does not mean that you will not have after-effects or long Covid. This is what makes Covid different from so many other viral infections.

The first 3 months post Covid
  • Are very critical. An opportunity to reverse any after-effects that do not yet show any symptoms.
  • You will know of after-effects only if you do tests. Too early for symptoms.
  • For example, being in the pre-diabetic stage has absolutely no symptoms. But if ignored, you could become diabetic - which is far more difficult to reverse and may require medical treatment. The pre-diabetic stage could be reversed without medicines, with only the right diet, exercise, and reduction of stress.
  • Some health parameters will go haywire post any infection and then come back to normal eventually, for most people.
  • After Covid, for some people, the numbers do not return to normal. Research is still ongoing as to why some people are more susceptible to after effects than others. Right now we can't accurately predict who will have problems after full recovery and who won't.
  • What causes long Covid?  (Jan 31, 2022)

Tests to do immediately after recovery
  • A few basic blood tests are usually prescribed to check impact to your health parameters. These are some of the tests doctors prescribe usually to check your risk of heart disease or diabetes post Covid. (Google to know more about illnesses that follow Covid) Please check with your doctor - they will prescribe tests based on your existing health condition, predisposition to certain illnesses etc.
    • CBC + ESR
    • High Sensitivity CRP
    • Troponin
    • D Dimer
  • Check cortisol when you do your blood test - if stress is high, your blood sugar will go up.
  • Based on the results, your doctor may advice a more detailed health checkup.
  • Some people develop diabetes post Covid. Including children. If caught early you can reverse this through diet.
  • The D Dimer test helps predict the possibility of blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes.  It may be naturally elevated for people with certain conditions. So please consult a doctor. If needed, your doctor may prescribe an anticoagulant.
  • If the numbers don't settle down after a few months a good nutritionist could help set right some things - if caught early. The longer the delay, you may need medication.
Exercise
  • DO NOT re-start exercise the week after you recover, even if you are feeling great. People have died of heart attacks post Covid, sometimes months later - with no warning signals whatsoever. And often during exercise. "As the body’s immune system fights off the virus, the inflammatory process can damage some healthy tissues, including the heart."
  • Heart Problems After Covid-19: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/heart-problems-after-covid19
  • Give it at least a month before you do anything strenuous - or much more if you have long Covid symptoms. Maybe your Covid was very mild, and you did not take any medicines - but your body has gone through a lot of wear and tear internally, which you cannot see.
  • Get clearance from your doctor before you do anything strenuous - exercise-induced long Covid can go on for months together and significantly lower your quality of life, put you at risk of other health issues.
Recovery/Healing/Prevention of Long Covid
  • Ayurveda has rasaayanaas to be taken immediately after recovery for a couple of weeks - which help rejuvenate the entire system internally and heal the damage done during the fight against the virus. This supposedly helps reduce the possibility of after-effects and long Covid. Consult a good Ayurvedic doctor.
  • If you develop long Covid, see tips here: http://asha-usefulinfo.blogspot.com/2021/09/long-covid-tips-on-dealing-with-it.html

Long Covid: Tips on dealing with it

Long Covid impacts different people differently. And can start immediately after recovery or much later. Common symptoms include increased heart rate, breathing issues, dizziness, loss of memory, brain fog, depression, anxiety, gastric disturbances, gynaec issues in women, muscle pain, rashes etc. New symptoms sometimes start months later. These are NOT imagined issues or a result of anxiety. Research is still ongoing - here are the latest theories:

Disclaimer: This information has been gathered from many people. May or may not work for you. It is important to have a complete health check-up done before you try out alternate therapies/coping mechanisms. Discuss with your doctor before you try anything. If you have existing health conditions, you need to be cautious.

The Good News: Everything below involves improving your overall health and wellbeing. So you may now start living a far healthier life than before. :)

For high heart rate/breathing issues/anxiety
  • If you have heart-rate and breathing-related issues - AND did not find anything wrong in your health checkups, these are the other two common possibilities. Your high heart rate could be caused by some impact to the nervous system or the gut.
Impact to Nervous System
  • Find a good yoga teacher who can teach you 1:1. Ask for asanas that work on the vagus nerve, which controls heart rate. Pranayama helps bring down heart rate and improves breathing. There are SOS ones you can learn too. This helped me hugely!
  • The basic principle - exhale double or more the length of your inhale. If you inhale for 3 seconds, try to exhale for 6 or more seconds, as much as you can stretch it. Pull your stomach in and keep exhaling, as slow as possible. Automatically your heart rate will come down, and you will feel calmer. It also works because you lift up the diaphragm, which is good for the vagus nerve apparently. Breathe from your chest, not from your nose - open up your chest and fill in air.
  • This practice also improved my normal breathing significantly - my normal exhalation is at least 3 times longer than it used to be before. Without me making any effort.
  • There are asanas also that help with calming the vagus nerve. Ask for that specifically. If you need the contacts of my yoga teacher, do let me know.
  • All of this helps with the anxiety that usually accompanies these symptoms.
  • 4-7-8 Breathing: Someone recommended this - quickly brings down heart rate and reduces anxiety. You may have to keep repeating it. https://www.webmd.com/balance/what-to-know-4-7-8-breathing
Impact to Gut
  • In my case, the turning point was my Ayurvedic doctor identifying that my high heart rate issues usually accompanied a meal. Her theory was that excess vaatha (gas) is produced, which pushes the diaphragm up, which causes the high heart rate.
  • Which was true, despite the fact that I did not feel bloated at all. Most often, all I had to do was to have lime soda when the heart rate goes up - and I would burp - and the heart rate would come down miraculously! :) Try this out, harmless. Though you cannot keep doing this too many times a day.
  •  So she treated my stomach, to reduce the formation of gas - medicines that reduce Vaatha in the body. I took around 4 months of this, she kept varying and tapering down medicines, and completely stopped after that. The symptoms stopped almost completely, with only rare occurrences. I can share her contacts if interested.
For Sleep Disturbances
  • Sleep is probably THE biggest factor that can hasten your recovery. Invest everything possible in getting more and better sleep.
  • Have two pinches of nutmeg in warm milk at bedtime - helps deepen sleep
  • Ashwagandha also helps, at bed time. Tablets, or churnam prescribed by an Ayurvedic doctor. I tried the RV Pundit tablets for a while, and then the churnam.
  • Moonbrew Bedtime Latte, for sleep: https://moonbrew.in/products/copy-of-bedtime-latte-beetroot-ginger-pack-of-2-10-off
  • A few drops of lavender oil on your pillow when you go to sleep has helped some long-term sufferers. Old Tree Lavender oil on Amazon was recommended by a friend. Put two drops on your pillow. One on the left side and one on the right.
For Stomach Issues
  • To supplement what the doctor asked you to take, some home remedies.
  • Again, Ayurveda has remedies that work for some people
Gynaecological Issues
  • Covid impacts thyroid levels in some people - and so some women don't get periods for many months post-Covid. This has happened to some women post the second vaccine also. Talk to your doctor as to whether to just wait or take medicines/alter diet.
Brain Fog

Medical tests you should do

Diet
  • A good nutritionist will help you adjust your diet to improve all the conditions listed above. A lot of health issues have an impact on the gut.
Exposure to Morning Sunlight

Tips from a neighbour who has used it for a family member:

"U need the personal masks .
-A plug for connecting the concentrator and u r good to go.
there is valve to set the needed oxygen (1-6 ltr) max.
Keep oxymeter nearby so that u can keep checking oxygen level.
-Keep eye on the water filled bottle. Need to refill it as soon as water is at the min level.

The oxygen concentrators are not very useful if the oxygen levels are below 80-82. So if levels are below 80-82 , doc advises to get admitted. Anything above patient can manage with deep breathing and concentrators."

What can you do to help?

Covid Help on Twitter: Follow this, check every day. Offer help if you can. Re-tweet messages for wider reach.

https://twitter.com/WeAreBangalore

Offer to call numbers to get help

The patient/family will be very stressed. Offer to call multiple numbers to get tests/oxygen/any other help they need. Calling numbers is a big task, you may need to call many to find something that works - spare the patient and their family this stress. Time is key here - so you could save lives.

Cheer Up Patients

Covid patients are isolated. And often depressed, low. Do what you can to cheer them up. Also the caregivers - they are also super-stressed, remember that.

Form Covid Task Forces

In your communities, offices. People who are on stand-by to help. A lot of the time the help needed is just to make phone calls. Which could save lives.

Food/Groceries etc

Offer to cook/deliver food

To Be Prepared

Disclaimer: This is just compiled information from various people, and based on common sense and personal experience. Not a medical doctor's advice, and it is not a complete list.

Pulse Oxymeter

FIRSTLY: Buy a Pulse Oxymeter to check oxygen saturation many times a day. This is a small device with a slot to keep your finger in, and it will read your oxygen levels and pulse rate. Available in all medical shops. Around 3000-4000 rupees usually.

This could save your life. If your oxygen starts falling, you know it is time to get medical help. For normal healthy people it will be around 97-99, lesser for asthmatics.

A delay in getting medical attention at this point is what they say causes a lot of death.

Note: Just because your oxygen looks great, it does not mean you don't have Covid. It could just mean that Covid hasn't impacted your lungs. My brother had Covid, and throughout his oxygen was at a high of 98.

Health

Stay in good health. This is your best bet towards better immunity.

  • Eat healthy food, one that balances any current medical condition. Consult a good nutritionist. These people changed my life! Have been following the diet they recommended, for 2 years now. https://quanutrition.com/. Have branches across India, and teleconsultation.
  • Do some form of exercise, at least walking for 30 mins a day.
  • Learn breathing techniques, Pranayaama. This also helps you calm down. Loads of stuff online.
  • Try  not to fall ill with anything else, because you will have to go to a hospital. Be super-careful. Don't slip and fall.
  • Use a mouthwash regularly, brush teeth twice. Could avoid a dentist visit.
